Members of the 2022-2023 cohort of PREP have figured out destinations for graduate study. They all were accepted into top schools in their fields, and for some, the final choice of program was very very difficult because they had totally amazing choices.

Congratulations to PREP@UCD scholars Arielle Hancko and Johnny Vertiz for being awarded NSF GRFPS! And PREP@UCD alum Brayan Vilanova, now at Cornell, received one too!

And alums Brandy Weathers (USC) and Kaitlynn Gov (UT Southwestern) received honorable mentions!

We're so proud of ALL of our PREP scholars and alums -- they've learned so much and we look forward to seeing all that they do in their careers.

10 April addition

PREP@UCD alum Tianna Grant gave a virtual seminar to students at her alma mater, St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY. In true PREP style, she included spoke about her journey from her undergraduate coursework, through her postbacc, to her graduate research on T cells and their receptors.

Tianna's discovery of bioinformatics in the LaSalle lab launched her into the Jimmy Ye lab and ImmunoX Computional Biology Initiative at UCSF.

As a Southern California Native, Davis and Sacramento had been my only taste of what Northern California was like. Davis’ 113 ℉ heat wave back in September was unbearable, the hottest climate I ever had the misfortune to experience; the rest of the month still hovered around the 80’s. To say I was excited to finally experience weather below 70 ℉ at San Francisco in early October was an understatement. I couldn’t wait to experience this famous city that was well known across the globe and would always pop up in cultural media and cinema.

Anna La Torre Vila, a faculty member in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, recently was recognized by UC Davis Graduate Studies for excellence in graduate mentoring and advising. Anna was recognized for her service to graduate programs, commitment to advising and mentoring, and positive impact on graduate students and colleagues. 

PREP@UCD alum Amy Leslie received one of two 2022-2023 travel awards from the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. Amy, a doctoral candidate in Integrative Pathobiology and mentee of Dr. Allen Gao, will use her award to support attending a cancer-relevant meeting in 2023.

Colton Baumler, a PREP@UC Davis alumnus and graduate student in UC Davis' Biochemistry, Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology program, received the College of Biological Sciences Dean's Mentorship Award in Spring 2022.  What's more, the quiet, self-effacing, and publicity-shy Baumler was featured as part of an article on first generation college students in the Fall 2022 issue of a UC Davis publication, In Greater Focus.

After nearly two months of editing our NSF GRFP essays, all five of the 2022-23 PREP scholars finally submitted our applications and immediately packed into cars and drove east to Fallen Leaf Lake.

We spent the weekend of October 14th-16th at the highly anticipated Molecular and Cellular Biology T32 Retreat. We'd been told that we would hear science talks from graduate students in the training program, network with other students and faculty, and explore the lake (situated about 1 mile from Lake Tahoe). 

Several labs at UC Davis currently are searching for junior specialists (i.e., lab techs in a one-to-two- year position focused on research, rather than lab management)
