What to expect in Grad School, year 1

Forewarned is forearmed.

Three PREP alumni after giving advice to scholars about the first year of grad school
Arthur, Celena, and Maribel, after giving advice to the 2021-2022 cohort of our scholars about what to expect as first year grad students

We invited current UC Davis grad students Arthur Flores (Immunology), Celena Lozano (Neuroscience), and Maribel Anguiano (Neuroscience) to talk with our current cohort of PREP@UCD scholars about their first year as grad students.

The scholars peppered them with questions in our hour-long discussion.

Arthur, Celena, and Maribel told us that they mostly knew what to expect because of their preparation in PREP@UCD. They lined up their first rotation in advance, knew what they wanted in a mentor, and were skilled at giving  presentations in a variety of styles. They've formed study groups, have met others outside their cohort, and maintain good work-life balance. However, they added that they've had to amp up their skills in time management because they've been BUSY.

In short, they're settled in their new labs, looking forward to what's to come, and thriving.

Thanks to all!
